This blog is dedicated to thoughts and impressions from reading the Book of Mormon by the Jeff and Amy Day family and their extended family and friends. This year our family plans to read the Book of Mormon together. Family members are invited to share their thoughts, feelings, testimony, and experiences as they read.
When I read the 4th Ch.of 1Ne. I am struck by the importance of Laban's sword. First, the Lord made sure that Nephi had Laban's sword (vs. 9). Did you ever wonder why Nephi could not have used his own sword ? Surely, he had one. Then, Nephi used Laban's sword to behead Laban (vs.18). The same experience was had by David when he slew Goliath (1Sam.17:51). It was the way the Lord used to accomplish his purpose of removing one man for the continuance of His people (vs.13). Then the sword was preserved to be shown to Joseph Smith and the three witnesses as a symbol of the importance of defending righteousness (D&C 17:1).
ReplyDeleteWhat does the Lord give us in place of the sword ? How can we defend righteousness ? Why, He gives us His Spirit, and with it, we bear our testimony. That becomes the "Sword of Riley" or the "Sword of Hannah" or the "Sword of Alec or Ian". I have a testimony !
I never thought of the sword that way before! Great insight. thanks for sharing Mom.
