J'Amy Starts the BOM Blog

This year our stake and ward have encouraged every member of our family to read the Book of Mormon. Amy, Riley, and I have all read the Book of Mormon several times but the kids have not. And, despite well intended previous efforts, we have not read it all the way through as a family. So, in the spirit of a good challenge, we've decided to take this one on and do our best to read it together.

Thanks to the advances of technology and our newly found love of blogging, we've decided to put together a family reading journal to record both as a family and individuals our thoughts and inspirations as we go. We invite you to post as well if you'd like to join in this challenge with us!

Tonight we completed the Testimony of Joseph Smith, Description of the Book of Mormon and 1 Nephi 1! We discovered a great read along partner online at http://lds.org/mp3/display/0,18692,5297-41,00.html as well. You can click on the chapter and the recorded audio does the reading and you can follow along in your scriptures.

It never ceases to amaze me the chain of events that unfolded with Moroni's visit to Joseph. In consequence for Joseph's desire to know his standing with the Lord he was visited by the heavenly messenger. I love how he describes how he felt after the visit: "I lay musing on the singularity of the scene, and marveling greatly at what had been told to me by this extraordinary messenger..." How extra-ordinary that must have been.

A few years ago we had the chance to go to Palmyra in the reconstructed version of that cabin on or near the location of the original. It looks tiny from the outside. The main floor couldn't have been much more than 20x30 and maybe 7 feet high. The upstairs was a pitched cabin roof with enough beds to sleep the entire family in 1 large room. I remember imagining what that visit by Moroni must have looked like in those humble surroundings.

The other verse we read that is one of my all-time favorites is..."But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender cmercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of ddeliverance." Elder Bednar gave a conference talk a few years ago about this topic and I've never quite read these verses the same. Tender mercies aren't random events strung together by happenstance. Rather a reminder that Heavenly Father is always looking out for us. We see this in our home and surrounding lots. In our good and bad times. As a parent, I recognize it better in moments with the kids ~ and certainly in moments with our extended family and friends.

So many people are increasingly being impacted by this economic downturn. I seem to get emails from friends of friends of people looking for jobs. This scripture gives me great hope to face the tough times ahead. It reminds me of where my trust and faith should be!
